Did Samsung copy Apple with their first Galaxy Gear ad?

Back in 2007 when the iPhone was just a hot $499 item on your Christmas List, Apple released an impressive ad called “Hello“, which compared the iPhone with a montage iconic images of existing phones seen in the media before cutting to an image of the iPhone on a black background. The ad proved so popular that Samsung has apparently decided that the best way to market their Samsung Galaxy Gear is to, well, re-record Apple’s original advertisement while making the Galaxy Gear the star of the show.

Samsung’s new advertisement, embedded above, depicts a montage of fictional “smart watches” and iconic characters in the media interacting with the devices before cutting to an image of the Galaxy Gear on a black background. Obviously there are some, erm, parallels here, and people are noticing. Matthew Panzarino of TechCrunch wrote this about the apparent advertising ripoff:

If I was a company which had gained a reputation for copying Apple’s work, the last thing I’d want is to have my advertising associated with anything they’d ever done.

Samsung, of course, just last year lost an iconic court case against Apple which accused Samsung of ripping off several important elements of Apple’s iPhone hardware and iOS software. Samsung had to pay billions of dollars in damages to Apple, but that doesn’t look like it was deterrent enough to stop the company from keep on getting “inspiration” from the fruit company in California.
