It may not be confirmed yet, but it may as well be – Samsung has officially sent out invitations to a special “Unpacked 5″ media event on February 24th, and now we’re learning a little bit more as for what to expect at the event. According to the New York Times, Samsung will indeed be using the event to launch the company’s next generation flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S5.

While the Samsung Galaxy S4 was largely seen as a relatively modest upgrade to the Galaxy S III, if the NY Times is to be believed the Galaxy S5 will be even more modest. The report warns would be customers not to expect anything revolutionary, claiming that the Galaxy S5 will instead be a minor upgrade to the Galaxy S4 with some small design changes, new software, and increased hardware specifications. Notable, Samsung will likely not be pushing the envelope when it comes to hardware “innovations” this go around, choosing not to implement the company’s oft rumored “Iris” fingerprint reader that many had expected to make an appearance on this handset. Iris is said to be Samsung’s spin on Apple’s Touch ID functionality introduced on the iPhone 5s.

Samsung will also not be taking this opportunity to upgrade the resolution of the display on the Galaxy S5, according to the report, and the device will instead feature a screen similar to what is currently found on the Galaxy S4. While all of this is rumor and heresy right now, we suspect that there’s something to it – and we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop in case anything changes. February 24th, bring it on.
