While every manufacturer tends to take certain – ahem – liberties when making benchmark claims for their latest and greatest piece of tech, none usually go so far as to outright lie about what their products are capable of. That is, unless they’re Samsung, who was just caught red handed doing exactly that.
Popular tech blog Anandtech noticed that their octocore Exynos Galaxy S4′s weren’t necessarily performing as Samsung says they outta be, so they did a little digging and discovered something pretty damning: Samsung’s own benchmarks, which they use to help advertise and promote the Galaxy S4, were taken using over clocked chips not available on any Samsung Galaxy S4 that you can actually buy yourself. What’s worse, Samsung has left the evidence right in the open – a quick look at any Exynos Galaxy S4 reveals a built in program called “BenchmarkBooster”, which when activated temporarily overclocks the processor for benchmarking purposes.
Here’s a word of advise to any manufacturer out there who hopes to sell a mainstream product – just tell us straight up what your device is capable of. Don’t fudge the numbers, don’t lie, and don’t pull our legs. The enterprising hackers of today will find out.
