Google pushing out Android 4.3 to “Play Edition” Galaxy S4 and HTC One smartphones

500px-android-logo_svgIf there’s one thing I’ve never been able to stomach about Android, it’s the horrible state of fragmentation and lack of updates for otherwise brand spanking new handsets. (Case and point, Android 4.2 on the Moto X) The wonder of the Nexus program is that this is essentially a non-issue – because Google sells the hardware directly to consumers, they don’t have to struggle with troublesome manufacturers or carriers who usually have absolutely zero interest in pushing out the latest and greatest version of Android.

Android 4.3 landed on the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and Galaxy Nexus the day of release a couple of weeks ago, and now owners of the “Play Edition” Galaxy S4 and HTC One get to be in on the fun as well as Google is pushing the new version of the operating system via an OTA update. Android 4.3 may be an incredibly incremental release with only minor improvements including an updated OpenGL, restricted user accounts, and TRIM support, but this is certainly good news for those who’ve ponied up upwards of $650 for a stock Android smartphone experience on some great hardware.
