Samsung today officially announced the long awaited Galaxy Gear, the company’s first smartwatch. Described as the “perfect companion” for your Galaxy Note III (though we can imagine they’d be just as happy if you used it with a Galaxy S4), the Galaxy Gear is more than likely the world’s smartest smartwatch – though that’s not exactly saying too terribly much.
Featuring a 1.9 megapixel camera, 720p video recording capabilities, and running a variant of Android 4.3, the Samsung Galaxy Gear’s most prominent feature is its 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display, which has a decidedly not high DPI resolution of just 320 x 320. You interact with the device through, of course, the Galaxy Gear’s touchscreen display, which is capable of displaying watch faces as well as a large variety of built in applications, including (but almost certainly not limited to) Runkeeper, Pocket, Path, and Evernote.
Samsung really hasn’t given too terribly much information about the Galaxy Gear’s full capabilities just yet, however we should learn more as we get closer to the device’s release in October. The Galaxy Gear will run you $299 – quite a bit more then the Galaxy Gear’s, erm, inspiration - the Pebble – however it does pack in a quicker, 800 MHz processor, a full color display, a larger variety of built in applications, and better syncing with Samsung’s Galaxy lineup – assuming you live in that ecosystem, of course.
